Parish Ministries include a wide variety of opportunities for Christian service in the Church and in the World. The menu of ministries is ever-growing as parishioners offer their gifts and talents to God, following the example of Fredrich Beuchner to find that place where “our greatest joy encounters one of the world’s deepest hungers”.
Schedule of Church Duties Honduras is the home of Nuestras Pequenas Rosas (Our Little Roses Orphanage), and, Lelia Amador, the orphan who Grace Church supports. Each year, Grace participates with other churches in our diocese to travel to Honduras and participate in a service project related to the community or the school. Haiti is our companion diocese. We support Father Val & his wife Carmel in their ministry involving healthcare, education and constructing schools & water facilities. Individuals travel with mission teams from the Diocese to Haiti. Namibia Ministries in southwest Africa. At the invitation of the Bishop of Namibia, The Rev. Jeremy and Penny Lucas, currently serving at St. Timothy’s in Athens, have accepted a three year appointment as missionaries to Namibia. Beginning in June Jeremy will serve on the staff of St. George’s Cathedral in Windhoek, and plans to prepare a new generation of candidates for ordination. Penny will be involved in the ministries of the church to those affected by AIDS. With a limited number of clergy, along with those approaching retirement age, training of new clergy is crucial. Through our diocesan covenants, all of us support such missionary work, but the funds, are limited. Funds provided by our national Mission Deployment Office will cover only half of the Lucas' expenses, and must be matched from other sources. If you could help, a donation may be made by check and sent to the church office marked "Mission Namibia". Rebuilding Together (formerly, “Christmas in April”) works throughout the year to assess applications for assistance from the poor and needy to do repair work and minor construction to homes to make them more livable. On the last Saturday in April, teams from Grace Church work throughout the day on one or more houses selected by the committee. An excellent opportunity for fellowship centered in work and service! Jubilee Community Center is a neighborhood-based initiative that receives partial funding and support from the Episcopal Church USA and is located in historic Cottage Hill and offers after-school tutorials, childcare, and parenting classes as well as assistance to neighbors in establishing cottage industries. Several members of Grace Church serve on the Board and parishioners participate in projects throughout the year, including assembling backpacks for school-aged children. Renascence Center is a half-way house in Montgomery that houses men leaving prison and working to re-orient themselves to the world by learning skills related to job search and independent living. Pastoral Counseling and Spiritual Direction is available for individuals or families. For information regarding counseling, call Father David. Music is an essential part of our life together and there are opportunities through the Adult Choir as well as the Children’s Choir for participation in this important ministry. Our organist/ choirmaster also offers private lessons in piano and organ. For specific information about these opportunities, call Sandra Allen. |
